Regional specialists
Once a month, applications are reviewed by our regional specialists. Regional specialists volunteer their time to The Action Fund. They are mostly activists themselves, with a background and network in activism in their section’s region. We work with five continent-based sections, which include around 10 volunteers per section. Cultural and political similarities, more than borders, guide this division. During the monthly meeting, region specialists decide which projects will be allocated funds and how much. In doing so, they use certain criteria.
The Action Fund is a small fund with limited resources. Each section is assigned an annual budget at the beginning of the year. This is the same amount for each section. We also have a flex-budget. The flex-budget is divided three times a year among the sections that have spent the most funds. This is to ensure that when there are major events in the region, the section can make the choice to support more than usual. Consider a war, an uprising or the beginning of a new mass movement.
Because the regional specialists meet once a month, action groups often know within a month whether and how many funds they have been allocated. Then they have the money in their account as soon as possible, but certainly within two weeks.
Urgent application
We also have an emergency track for unforeseen situations. This option is for urgent issues and unexpected political or social developments.
With an urgent application, it is possible to apply for up to 250 euros. Then an applicant will have an answer as soon as possible. The aim is to be able to provide an answer within 72 hours and that the funds are then in the applicant’s account within 24 hours.
Urgent applications are decided by the staff. When the staff does not have enough information to decide on a request, they call in the regional specialists to give advice.
The emergency budget is allocated an amount in the beginning of each year and is excluded from the flex pot.
